why can’t it be an aesthetic choice? and yes, aesthetics are informed by larger structural things and isms and white supremacy.

but can a black woman make an aesthetic choice and have it be understood as that?

and im thinking specifically of Nicki and Lil Kim. i’m trying to understand how they can be accused of wanting to be white because of blonde hair even though they reaffirm their blackness in ever other way

including their choice of artistic medium in the first damn place

like what happens to black women’s art when it can only be read through being a response to white supremacy or as part of the project of black uplift and black respectability? what do we miss out?

i’m thinking of all the different *ways* that i have seen black women rock blonde hair and i really don’t think the black women with blonde extensions dutty wining and p-popping at the block party “wants to be white.” and i think think that’s the context nicki and kim were coming from and i’m wondering what would happen if we took that into account.

and how does capitalism and the music business mediate that
