I really don’t understand why males are so hypersensitive. You don’t even have to endure the experience of cramps, yet you’re scared of even hearing about it.God, all the privilege you get as a white male must really shelter you from everything unpleasant

Ok, this panel just makes me glad I don’t watch this show or have an investment in it. I’m not really prepared to get into a long conversation about why this panel pisses me off, but I offer a link and excerpt from this: When Worlds Collide: Fandom and Male Privilege

After a while, we began organizing “chick nights,” gatherings of just the four of us and maybe some other women we knew from outside the group. For reasons that were often kind of bizarre, some of the men in the group took exception to this. They never organized nights at which we were excluded. When we pointed out that by the law of averages, a good half of the various social outings ended up being guy-only, they replied that it was not the same thing. “Look,” I finally said to one of them, “when we get together Saturday night, we’re going to paint our nails and put goop on our faces and play with each others’ hair and watch movies with really hot guys and talk about how hot the guys are and probably talk about sex and periods and all that fun stuff. Do you really have any interest in that?” “No,” he replied, “but we could do other stuff instead.” At which point I walked away, because otherwise things would have ended either with a rant on how it was not only more socially accepted but socially expected for women to be interested in stereotypically guy things than for guys to get into stereotypically female things (which I didn’t want to do, because really, we all did love gaming and horror movies and science fiction all that fun stuff), or else with me banging my head on the table.

The above gif asserts that a group of women going out
A: could only possibly be talking about rainbows, unicorns, and menstrual cramps
AND
B: That if this is the case, it is bad and totally not worthwhile to anyone, ever.
Fuck both of those presumptions.

Is it any consolation that Sheldon is, and has been acknowledged and called out as, an extreme misogynist? It’s not accepted like “oh, that’s fine behavior”, either, the characters usually side-eye him and only don’t say anything because he won’t listen. It bothers me more that they show a character like him (socially awkward, possibly neurodivergent, asexual) as being the only blatantly bigoted one, despite the shit that the other, “normal” guys have actually done. (Ex. Howard(?) Making a remote control car with a camera drive under Penny to get an up-skirt at a time when he could blame someone else, taking a picture when Penny fell asleep on his shoulder and titling it “me and my girlfriend” on facebook, half-forcing an EXTREMELY uncomfortable Summer Glau to take a picture with him to get him to leave her alone, etc) Howard is kind of a joke, but no one points it out as much as they do with Sheldon and it’s not treated as as problematic.

I’ve never actually seen the “Sheldon is a misogynist” angle before. I dunno, I’m not sure I totally agree? He’s shown through the show to be unable (or at least entirely unwilling) to try to relate to other people, and most of the awkward/uncomfortable things he says come of that, not of any actual prejudice? Maybe I just haven’t seen it… Howard however: ewwwwwwwwww. He put me off the show for soooo long. Plus he makes a load of racist jokes at Raj’s expense (but they’ve toned that down a lot I’ve noticed)
